Mentoring and research philosophy
The principal investigator of this group is Morag Clinton, and she has clearly defined and integrated research and mentorship philosophies. In the context of mentoring students and early career colleagues, this means centering their needs, and building each relationship around individual students. Every scientist and future scientist is different, and brings with them unique lived experiences and existing insight. In this group we seek to celebrate the diversity that each individual brings to enhance our field. In practice, this means supporting the growth of every group member, accepting that perfection is not a reality for anyone to achieve, but that through prioritizing respect, honesty and doing our best we can all achieve our own definitions of success.
Students and professionals that join this group can expect a mentorship plan tailored to their needs and expectations. They will work with a PI dedicated to high quality research directed at improving our collective understanding of aquatic animal health, but who is also committed to investing time and energy in all individuals within the group, and their careers.
Dr Morag Clinton and everyone within the Fish Health & Pathology group are dedicated to fostering a diverse and inclusive environment in the lab and at UAF overall. Many of us have passion projects, committees and organizations we donate our time to towards this goal. Work life balance and investing energy towards things that matter to you is important, we will will support anyone with a genuine interest in our work becoming involved, providing whatever support and accommodations you might require to succeed.
